Sending Information to Louis Ventre, Jr. You should not send confidential, privileged or sensitive information, unprotected through the Internet, including email.

Federal law prohibits Interception. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, as amended, 18 U.S.C. §§2510-22, prohibits the intentional and nonconsensual interception of any wire, oral or electronic communication, the unauthorized access of stored communications, or the disclosure or use of any information from an illegally intercepted communication. It may be illegal, but the fact remains that email and the Internet are not secure from eavesdropping or interception by unscrupulous third parties.

An Ounce of Prevention. If you decide to send confidential information via email, it is highly recommended that you protect the documents you send with a password and then communicate the password separately. This, at least, provides some measure of confidence that your confidential information, if intercepted, will have some protection.

How to Password Protect. In order to password protect an MSWord document, select: — File — Save As — Tools — General Options —. Then, at the bottom left of the window that opens, add your password and click — ok —. Send the password protected document in one email. Then, send Attorney Louis Ventre, Jr. the password in a second email.  Other programs will probably also have a means to password protect a document.
